Texas property and casualty exam prep providers compared

List prices for Texas property and casualty prep from five providers, checked on 20 September 2026, and why the pre-licensing hours most of them sell are not required for this license.

By Published Last reviewed

Texas exam-prep providers charge anywhere from under a hundred dollars to several hundred for material covering the same published outline. The gap is mostly about what is bundled, and some of it is about a course requirement that does not apply to this license.

Do you have to buy a course at all?

Not for this license. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes three application steps for a general lines property and casualty license: take an exam, begin the application process on TDI's fingerprint portal, and apply. A pre-licensing course is not among them.

This trips people up because the number forty attaches to a different route. Texas offers a one-time temporary general lines license, and that route requires at least 40 hours of training given by the appointing company that sponsors you. If you are going straight for the permanent license under your own steam, that requirement is not yours. Two of the providers below say the same thing on their own sites.

So a prep course is a purchase you make because it helps, not because the state obliges you.

A.D. Banker's public pages do not show a price until you choose a state and a package, so there is no list figure to quote. That is a fact about their shop, not a judgment about their material.

Insurance Exam Ready publishes this page. Our own Texas course is not on sale, so it is not in the table.

Why is the spread so wide?

Because the products are not the same shape. At the lower end you are buying revision material: question banks, audio, explanations, aimed squarely at the exam. At the higher end you are buying a taught course measured in credit hours, sometimes with a live instructor, built to satisfy pre-licensing rules in the states that impose them.

Texas does not impose them for this license. A course sized to meet another state's hours requirement is not wrong, but you are paying for structure the Texas rules do not ask of you.

What the price does not tell you

Whether the material tracks the outline version you will actually sit. Your examination is built from the outline in force on the day, currently publication #124401, effective from 2026-09-01. Ask any provider which outline version their Texas material is written against and when it was last revised. A cheap course against a superseded outline is worse value than an expensive one against the current one.

Pass-rate advertising is worth treating the same way. Providers publish their own figures on their own terms, and none of them is audited against the Texas Department of Insurance's results.

What you pay regardless of who you study with

Three charges sit outside any course. The examination fee goes to Pearson VUE and is shown with the other official exam facts on the Texas Property and Casualty course page. Fingerprinting is charged by IdentoGO by IDEMIA. The TDI resident agent application fee is $50, and it is neither refundable nor transferable.

Those are the same whichever provider you pick, and they are covered in full in what it costs to get a Texas property and casualty license.

How to read the table

Decide first whether you want taught hours or revision material, because that is the real fork. Then check the outline version. Then compare price. Taking those in the other order is how people end up paying for a course sized for a rule that does not apply to them.
